Unseen Ellis Island

In 2003, after having fortuitously received a small glimpse of the unrestored South Side of Ellis Island, photographer Sheldon Aronowitz began the long process of cutting through the government’s red tape to gain full access to Islands 2 and 3 in order to document it in 3D. After receiving grants for the project from both the National Stereoscopic Association and Ellis Island, Aronowitz and fellow photographer Gary Schacker began the emotional journey of photographing the long-forgotten history of the decaying buildings. A selection of the resulting images are included in this 3-reel set.

"A Case of Levitation: The Story of Frances Naylor"

This set was made in conjunction with an exhibition by the same name, and features the images of Frances Naylor made by her father during her amazing period of levitation. Read below for a description of the exhibition:

Frances Naylor's legs were amputated when she was only two years old due to a circulatory problem. But when she was thirteen Frances began having powerful dreams that she could walk. One morning after such a dream, she woke to find she had the ability to levitate.

Her mother was a devoutly religious woman and forbade Frances from displaying this ability outside. Her father was fascinated however, and made a number of stereo photographs of his daughter as she floated about their house.

Just as mysteriously as it began, the ability to levitate was lost about a month later, and Frances sunk into a deep depression. She was later institutionalized and died later of pneumonia. The photographs which her father made remain as the only record of this amazing occurrence.

"Magic and Murder in the Candy Factory"

In the midst of the Depression, a teenage orphan was murdered at the Chicago factory where she worked. A clerk at the factory was charged with the crime after evidence was discovered showing he had an obsession with the girl.

Recently, other evidence has surfaced that calls that finding into question. Was there a cult meeting in the building after hours? Did the orphan, young Anna Sula, have supernatural abilities?

This new presentation by Christopher Schneberger details the story and presents never before seen evidence including photographs revealing Anna’s incredible powers, and perhaps her true identity.

"The Strange Case of Dr. Addison and the Crosswell Twins"

This set was made in conjunction with an exhibition by the same name, and features the images made by Dr. Addison of Regina Crosswell and the ghost of her twin sister, Lydia. Read below for a description of the exhibition:

In the spring of 1908, Dr. Charles Addison disappeared. The noted botanist, amateur zoologist, and photographer, had been making a series of images of a young girl named Regina Crosswell. Regina's twin sister, Lydia, had died in the winter, though the circumstances were unclear. Dr. Addison, however, had become convinced that Lydia had not entirely departed from our earthly plane. We have re-created Dr. Addison's studio and invite you to visit, peruse the photographs Addison made, and draw your own conclusions.

Actaeon at Home

The mythical Actaeon was a hunter who stumbled upon a naked Artemis and nymphs bathing post-hunt. For his trespasses, he was transformed into a stag to be devoured by his own hounds. Our Actaeon may or may not have anything at all to do with the mythical Actaeon.

Franz Kafka

In addition to well-known longer works such as The Metamorphosis, The Penal Colony, and The Castle, Franz Kafka wrote a series of parables. These parables are brief and enigmatic re-imaginings of traditional mythic and historic figures. Poseidon grows bored with the sea; Alexander the Great is overcome by the weight of his own body; and the desecration of a temple becomes a ritual event for its worshippers. When Vladimir was much younger she painted the words to several of these parables, in English and German, inside of the storm drains of Corvallis, Oregon. Due to the fact that she used water-based paint, they have almost certainly been washed away by now.

This set consists of four handmade Vladmaster reels and a charming box in which to keep them. The reels feature 3D images of dioramas and characters designed, photographed and hand-assembled by Vladimir. The disks and boxes are printed and die cut by Pinball Publishing. Each reel retells a different parable. The parables retold are: Couriers, Alexander the Great, Poseidon, and Leopards. Each image is accompanied by text from the parable printed on the reel. The reels are viewable in any Viewmaster™ viewer (not included).

Invisible Cities

In Italo Calvino's novel Invisible Cities, Marco Polo entertains an aging Kubla Khan by recounting tales of cities that he has visited in his travels. Marco Polo describes fifty-five such cities and the novel revels in the interplay between the different cities so that the reader is left to wonder whether the cities actually represent different aspects of a single city, different internal experiences of place, or something else entirely. Unfortunately, these Vladmasters which recount excerpted tales of only four such cities, cannot hope to recreate the resonances and complexities of the novel. Instead they offer pretty three-dimensional pictures assembled out of small household objects and the hope that those who have not yet read the novel might feel compelled to do so.

This set consists of four handmade Vladmaster reels and a charming box in which to keep them. The reels feature 3D images of dioramas and characters designed, photographed and hand-assembled by Vladimir. The disks and boxes are printed and die cut by Pinball Publishing. The four cities included in the set are: Zirma, a city which mysteriously repeats itself; Valdrada, a city built on a reflective lake where every person and action is mirrored; Argia, a city with dirt in place of air; and Baucis, a city elevated high above the clouds on thin stilts. Each image is accompanied by text printed onto the reel describing the city. The reels are viewable in any Viewmaster™ viewer (not included).

The Public Life of Jeremiah Barnes

On March 19th 1992 a recreational airplane flying low over the Cascade foothills noticed an unusual number of orange forms dotting the forest floor. Further investigation revealed 86 earthmoving vehicles, idle and overgrown with weeds, spread over five acres of forest. The Public Life of Jeremiah Barnes is a Vladmaster investigation of this occurance and the man who may or may not have been responsible for it. The story in dioramas built from tiny model railroad men and 55-cent plastic bulldozers. Almost none of the objects are larger than one inch in any dimension. Narration is included on a mini-cd accompanying the reels. It features sound effects, music, and a wonderful ding noise to cue the change from image to image.

This set consists of four handmade Vladmaster reels, the box to keep them in, and the mini-cd soundtrack. The story was written and photographed by Vladimir. The reels and box were designed by Vladimir and printed and die cut by Pinball Publishing. Toussaint Perrault narrates the story and also wrote and recorded the accompanying music.
